Wow! The new list of
Forbes magazine's 400 richest Americans shows their wealth is up 13 percent
thanks to rising stock and home prices,according to the CSMonitor. That has
helped others, too. But many don't feel it.
As a group, the 400 saw their net worth rise by about 13
percent to some $1.7 trillion. Is this
one more sign that ordinary Americans have good reason to worry that the wealthiest
are leaving them behind?
The question is a hot one for both economic and political
reasons. The Forbes list is rolling out alongside recent news that about 1 in 6
Americans is in poverty, that median incomes fell in 2011, and that
unemployment remains higher than 8 percent. It also comes as voters are
weighing a presidential contest between a multimillionaire businessman and an
incumbent whose economic plan includes raising taxes on the rich....
