With New Jersey still reeling from superstorm Sandy, some
coastal towns are now evacuating residents in light of an impending nor’easter
Wednesday, WSJ reports. Brick Township,
in Ocean County, issued a mandatory evacuation for residents in low-lying areas
to leave by 6 p.m. Tuesday. The local Office of Emergency Management listed 19
areas that were under mandatory evacuation, and the township “strongly
encouraged” those whose homes were badly-damaged by Sandy to also leave the
area.
In Toms River to the south, the township will make a
decision later Tuesday whether to issue mandatory evacuations along the shore
and voluntary ones on the mainland. The concern is where to evacuate people, as
the township’s shelter is already full of 200 people who now lack homes because
of Sandy, said Debbi Winogracki, a spokeswoman for Toms River.
The nor’easter could especially hurt shore towns like Toms
River as it swept away sand, dunes and other natural protections against storm
surge…..
