Shocker: Poverty rate, food stamp use rising in NYC

According to the NY Post there are lies, damned lies and statistics…..And that’s how Nicole Williams and the rest of the city’s steadily rising number of unemployed feel.  The official decline in the city’s unemployment rate, to 8.8 percent in October from 9.1 percent a year ago, isn’t a recovery for a huge number of residents like Williams, 36.

The East Harlem mother of four is supplementing her unemployment benefits with food from the Yorkville Common Pantry, a charity on East 109th Street…..The government’s latest statistics show what Williams and the others at the food pantry face:
* New York’s poverty rate last year rose to 20.9 percent, from 20.1 percent a year earlier. * 1.7 million New Yorkers last year were classified as “poor,” living on less than $18,530 a year for a family of three.  * About 750,000 are scraping by on less than half the poverty income.  * Food-stamp recipients jumped from 19.3 percent to 20.6 percent of New Yorkers in the last year….
