Goldman Goes Muppet Hunting


Goldman Sachs employees don’t like to be seen sweating. But at least a few professionals at the firm are more than a bit nervous after CEO Lloyd Blankfein started scanning e-mails and phone calls looking for employees who disparaged clients, sources told the NY Post.

“I think some people are worried that there’s a need to find a scapegoat,” said one source. The hunt began after a London employee announced his resignation in a March 14 New York Times Op-Ed story that claimed Goldman execs regularly dissed clients and put the firm’s interests ahead of its clients.

Goldman is scouring internal e-mails looking for employees who’ve been giving Muppets a bad name by using that phrase to refer to clients. While it is normal for a Wall Street firm to monitor e-mail and phone calls made on company equipment to monitor compliance with regulations, a hunt for client-bashing language is not the norm.
