Protesters Occupy the Court System

Police have made nearly 2,000 arrests related to the Occupy Wall Street movement, and a picture began to emerge Monday of how the most common of those cases—disorderly conduct—will proceed through the criminal justice system, the Wall St Journal writes..

In a courtroom crowded with mostly young people, prosecutors and defense attorneys sparred over motions related to the violation, which is normally pleaded out with the promise that it will be cleared if the defendant stays out of trouble for six months.

But hundreds of OWS protesters have opted to take such cases to trial instead of pleading, insisting that they were wrongfully arrested...
