Greenwich Life: 1 in 7 cars in Greenwich a BMW or Mercedes
Eat your hearts out. In Greenwich, the Merritt Parkway goes by another name, and it's not Route 15 -- it's the autobahn. At least one out of every seven autos registered here is a BMW or Mercedes, according to the town's newly updated tax rolls, which also boast 977 Porsches and four Maybachs, including one worth $230,000 owned by none other than a hedge fund.
But compared to the most expensive rides on the Grand List, so-called German luxury brands represent mere starter cars to the moneyed gentry in this town, if one could call them that.
Greenwich is trading up, with a growing demographic of horsepower-obsessed denizens swayed by brands such as Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin.
Motor vehicle assessments, the equivalent of 70 percent of current market value, shot up by $50 million overall in the past year to just under $751 million. Of the 20 most expensive cars registered in Greenwich, which has nearly as many automobiles (54,093) as people (61,171), just four are German-made.
